David Beck Standup Stand Up Comedian Artist

David Beck is a traveling stand-up comedian traveling the United States. Though a classic muscle and Pontiac guy at heart, he has a weird thing for performance economy cars and Nissan Sentras. His designs include “Endangered Species” and the recent "Dash Space Invaders".

David took some time in between stand-up gigs to answer a few questions of ours:

How did your interest in cars start?

As a kid, Hot Wheels was a big influence. For some reason, I always liked the stock looking classic ones more than the wild custom ones. My dad also taught me how to build models, and the first one we built was a replica of the 1957 Chevy Bel Air that he used to have. My dad has owned 3 cars in his life: a '52 Chevy wagon, that '57, and a '70 Monte Carlo SS454 that he still owns. I remember riding to NASCAR races with him in the Monte Carlo. I always wanted to drive that car when I was a teenager, but was never allowed. I'm glad he never let me drive it now, because if he had, it would not be around today! Not being able to drive that made me want an old car of my own, and I found a 1966 Pontiac Tempest Custom for $500. I knew nothing about cars when I bought it, but I ended up building that thing from the ground up in about 2 years, with the help of a GTO expert that I met when I was looking for parts. He became my car mentor, and lifelong friend. He taught me everything I know about cars. To this day I buy all my cars from him, and call on him whenever there is a car problem I cannot figure out.

How does your interest manifest itself?

I travel for a living, so I always try to buy the sportiest version of whatever car I am driving: 1994 Sentra SE-R, 2001 Sentra SE 2.0 with the Performance Package, 2003 Focus SVT, and my current 2008 Sentra SE-R Spec-V. If I see someone in an old car, or something really fast, rare or interesting, I have to stop and talk to them. I schedule work around attending the North American International Auto Show in Detroit (9 years running), and I spend a lot of time on my current cars forum boards and social media pages. I love going to car shows and local meets. I can't go by a magazine rack in a book store without seeing what's in all the car magazines.

Describe your vehicle, and what makes it special:

My current car is a 2008 Nissan Sentra SE-R Spec-V. It's my 5th Sentra, and the one I have modded the most (2J Racing Light weight pulley, 2J Racing Tune, K & N Typhoon intake, 2J Racing custom exhaust, Tein S Tech springs, Sachs Advantage shocks and struts, 5mm wheel spacers). 190whp 176 lb. ft. torque. I love the B16 platform, though oddly enough I hated it when I first saw it. I thought it was hideous. Now, I think it's a great looking car, and it's also quite rare. Only 2% of Sentras made from 2007-2012 were Spec-V's.

What was your first car? Do you have any sort of brand loyalty?

My first car was a 1974 Camaro, which was sold quickly when I got the 1966 Tempest Custom on the road. I am a Pontiac guy at heart, and want to build another one day. For now though with as much as I drive, I stick with Nissans. I've had 5 Sentras, and put about 1.2 million miles on them.....the 2001 SE 2.0 went 511,000.

What did the funds from blipshift help you accomplish?

It actually paid for most of my custom 2J Racing exhaust I just had put on last week. Money well spent, car sounds mean.

What is your dream car?

1970 GTO Judge Ram Air IV, 4 speed, in Starlight Black.

What are some of your hobbies, not relating to cars?

I like to cook, baking especially. I make a mean blackberry cobbler, and pumpkin pie from scratch.

Any advice for fellow artists? How did you find the process overall?

Advice for fellow artists??? I'm just glad to be considered an artist with all the talent you have on this site. I love submitting to Blipshift, I love when they accept a design, because I like knowing that other car people understand and like my design. The money is nice too, but it gives me a sense of accomplishment.
